There were cheers and a few tears on Friday, October 27th, as the daughter of a Mehlville School District teacher was the first child to ring a very special bell on Children Hospital’s new highway billboard.

4 year old Avery Lucas was diagnosed with leukemia two years ago and immediately started chemotherapy treatments.  Avery’s mom Morgan is a physical education teacher at Bernard Middle and her brother attends Blades Elementary.

The new Children’s Hospital billboard is located along Interstate 44, just east of Big Bend Boulevard.  Whenever a child completes chemotherapy treatments, the child gets to ring a special bell at the hospital which is linked to a bell that rings on the billboard.  Friends and supporters from Bernard and Blades gathered underneath the billboard, and at 3:30pm on October 27th Avery became the first child to ring the victory bell.

Congratulations to Avery and her family!!
